“Uncle Stubby Gets Married” is one of those books that expose children to the fascinating world of animals and their life. Just like in real life, the young readers will attend the wedding taking place in Valentine Fairy Forest, where two squirrels are getting married. It is a very enriching tale, in which the authors have merged a story of kindness, joy, and celebration. Most young children have heard of weddings or witnessed them at some point and have some knowledge of what marriage is all about. But how awesome it is to be exposed to the squirrels’ wedding!

This book is part of a series, which I sadly haven’t had a chance to read yet, except for this one book. I’m definitely planning to read them in the near future. This particular story is about the marriage between Uncle Stubby and his fiancée Sparkles. The friends and family are traveling to Valentine Fairy Forest to celebrate the happy day with two squirrels who are in love. The tale is filled with humor, kindness, fun, and all the happy moods that weddings prompt. It’s simple and believable. Children will find themselves in the memorable setting of animals that are teaching them good lessons while providing entertainment.

I must inform you that this book is for children who are a little older. It will best serve elementary school students who like to explore life situations, children who already have an understanding of marriage and are able to maintain their attention on a subject for those who are a little older. Through the story, the young readers will develop logic, inspiration, and curiosity. And, of course, who doesn’t want to find out what squirrels are up to when no one is watching them? 

Overall, two talented authors, Jackson and Raymond, have created an exciting fable that will educate children about morals, circumstances, and occasions. Readers don’t need previous information about the characters to understand this story. It stands on its own just fine.

"I grew up in a small Kansas (USA) town and I lived in more than one state since then. At this time, my husband and I split our time between Kansas and Colorado (we love the mountains and off road 4-wheeling). Traveling is one of our most favorite things to do and I always have a book or even three books that I read, in the same week. Books were really my thing. It seemed like every time I turned around I was obtaining a new library card due to the current one being stamped complete. Diving into a good book made any day perfect and you would be surprised at the number of books I read over and over. I drew paper dolls and clothes for them, and using watercolor as my medium when painting scenes, especially flowers. A Clever Way for Children to Learn and Grasp History

This book coincides with the actual 150th birthday of Ellsworth in the summer of 2017. Illustrations are found on each page, most of them painted. Big Whitey tells the history of Ellsworth, and Fort Harker, with historical buildings, notable landmarks, and scenes painted by the author. At the end of this story, Little Whitey asks his father if they can re-enact the old west, dress like cowboys, and do a pretend cattle drive just like Ellsworth, KS. The squirrels dress in cowboy and cowgirl gear, and they even have a chuck wagon cook. They herd longhorn cattle, sing the state song of Kansas, and have lots of fun during their re-enactment. At the end of the story, they enjoyed a barn dance, celebrated the 150th birthday of Ellsworth, and Uncle Stubby took pictures and ‘selfies’. 

Children will love seeing the old west come alive with two dogs and a family of squirrels dressed in western attire, and using a small amount of cowboy slang. Absorbing historical facts in such an organized and succinct manner makes remembering facts much more fun, and easier. Children, their parents, and teachers alike will revere this book. All will certainly enjoy discussing its major points. Teachers can use thematic lessons centered on this book. Dogs and squirrels give the book a special animal twist. Fabled ancient characters of Ellsworth come together with lessons on cattle huts, dirty tracks, and important milestones.

That Is How Things Are by Mrs. D. is a book with two short stories, The Autumn Wind and The Kitten and the Sparrow, which explore the magic and beauty of autumn. 

In the first story, readers get to see the gray-silver headed wind rising from the hammock to see the garden painted with golden hues. The wind was disturbed by the beauty around him and annoyed that autumn is always in a hurry. He got angry and blew chilly gusts, shaking the trees around and scaring the leaves. 

The little kitten watches the cold wind tossing a single leaf, and the kitten wonders who will win; the wind or the leaf? The kitten is worried about his friends, the squirrel and the sparrow. The sparrow tells the kitten that he is moving to the woods with his relatives and they will fly to a warmer place during winter. Now the little kitten wants to know what winter is. Will the kitten be able to understand what winter is?

What appealed the most to me about the book is, apart from introducing the seasons to young readers in an interesting way, the author blends the two short stories and ties them together beautifully. The illustrations are stunning and colorful and I like the way the author has given the wind a powerful personality, making it easy for readers to connect with it. What a beautiful book for parents to read out during bedtime and what a charming book to use for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries, especially during autumn!

This is the second book I’ve read by authors S. Jackson and A. Raymond. Just as in their previous book, which I read today, “Suzy Has a Secret,” the authors are tackling another important subject—bullying. Their story speaks about a difficult subject that children face every minute of their lives. The pain, the shame, the loss of confidence could be experienced during both their childhood and their adult life. The scars from the bullying may never heal, and victimized children could turn into aggressors, outcasts, or criminals. Abused by bullies, children may never recover their self-esteem and self-worth.

This book also teaches that being different is OK. Sometimes it is even rewarding—just like in this book, a dance with a beautiful girl or special talents that other children may not have. Parents and teachers should think of using this story as a foundation for debates about how to stop bullying in school and on the streets, and how the victim feels when the stronger and crueler make fun of them. It's also a good starter for homeschools and day-care centers. The earlier we teach our children what impact bullying has on the lives of harassed children, the better chance we have to save another child from the violence. Well done!

A Good Guide for Parents and Children

Suzy Has a Secret

This book teaches a child, ages four to eight years-old, about personal safety and body ownership. Children learn how to identify who safe adults are in a child’s life. This book shows in positive and practical ways how parents, and educators, can talk to children about personal safety. Children learn about bad touch and good touch, and how their body belongs to them. Parents and educators can help children learn who the safe people are in their lives, and that they can always tell one of them about anything that may happen, and they aren’t comfortable about. Using little bug fairies and fairy houses, ensures that children aren’t scared when this story is read to them, or they read it on their own.

Inappropriate touching is a delicate subject. It is always hard and uncomfortable to talk to children about their bodies and how they should act if someone touches them improperly and then asks the child to keep it a secret. Fear can seal the child’s lips.

“Suzy Has a Secret” is about teaching a child to be open with their parents or to even tell a trusted friend if something terrible happens. This is what happened to Suzy in this fleeting story when her relative touched her in places that were wrong. Scared and ashamed, Suzy doesn’t know how to respond to her uncle’s game. This creates a battle in her immature mind, because she knows what is right and wrong. Her parents always taught her that if something bad happened, she should tell them immediately.

Confused, Suzy turns to her friend. Sometimes it is easier for a child to tell a reliable friend what happened than to confess it to parents. Suzy is no different, and she shares her uncle’s dreadful actions with her friend Lucy, who convinces her to talk to Suzy’s parents. So she did.

This book is a good guide for parents and children on how to tackle this very important subject. Every child should know that it is safe to tell someone trusted if someone touches him or her in private places without permission.

A great tool in how to delicately and directly deal with child abuse!

I was given this moving book by the author, and boy, I wasn’t disappointed. It is a very relaxing and captivating read, with good, developed characters, like those we meet daily. The main character, Poppy, reminded me of young women I’d already met at some point in my life.

Poppy tried to live her life like every other ambitious young woman who dares to reach for her star. Smart and driven, she tried to balance her life between her career and her private life. Just as in reality, there are many struggles and successes, losses and loves, and unhealed wounds and painful memories of her past. Luckily for her, she has great people in her life that she can trust and who support her completely.

Tina-Marie Miller did superb work in creating her characters. It was a smart strategy to show readers the city and country life that many readers could relate to. At first the story appears as a charismatic and loving fantasy, but its innocence soon disappears and the sweet illusion is crushed by the disturbing events and tragedies. I admit this story kept me wondering what would happen in the end, but I’m not willing to share my thoughts; each reader must find it for themselves…

Dream BIG!

I adore children’s books with a good message, and “Timmy, the Flying Mouse” is certainly one of them. It is a sweet, charming story with a genial character whose extraordinary courage and determination will appeal to readers of all ages. This daring little mouse proves that even mice can fly.

Barbara Ann Mojica 

Barbara Ann Mojica is a historian and retired educator. She writes historical articles for the Columbia Insider under the banner "Passages." Using the whimsical Little Miss History character, Barbara hopes to inspire children to learn about historical people and places. Little Miss History's antics make reading nonfiction a fun-filled adventure for all ages.

Little Miss HISTORY Travels to MOUNT RUSHMORE is her first stop. In her second journey she sails to The STATUE of LIBERTY. Little Miss HISTORY'S third adventure to SEQUOIA National Park finds her skydiving into the park to explore its history. This book recently received honorable mention in the Children's Literature Independently Published Principal's Awards (CLIPPA), and runner up in the nature/wildlife category of the 2015 Great Northwest Book Festival. In her fourth adventure, Little Miss HISTORY arrives at FORD'S THEATER in her horse and buggy just in time for the 150th Anniversary to witness an event that changed history. This book won the 2015 IAN Award for Outstanding Children's Nonfiction Book.

Where can you explore life on a submarine, an aircraft carrier, and outer space all in one place?
