This imaginative tale introduces young readers to a kitten and explores her experiences as she develops from a new born into a young, playful and curious cat! Each aspect of her development is filled with intrigue and entertainment as she discovers more about the world around her. Unlike her mother and other siblings, the realisation that her colouring is different from them causes her much distress but her mother is quick to offer reassurance that despite their difference in colouring, she is nonetheless a special cat – a Calico cat. And a fiercely independent one at that.
Her shenanigans unfortunately land her into trouble from time to time and she finds herself eventually being taken away from her mom and brothers. But this feisty and determined beauty doesn’t give up easily and you find yourself rooting for her as she gets into all kinds of mischief and breathing a sigh of relief as she manages to scrape through it all.
Eventually she comes upon Mrs. D. and her family who are immediately taken with her. Despite poor Mr. D’s suffering with cat allergies, they take her in and name her Nyda. But before long, Nyda can’t ignore the urge to go off exploring again and this brings forth more adventures for young readers to enjoy.
This is a beautiful and entertaining story that has been creatively written and will bring much joy to young readers.

Even if you dislike cats, you will fall in love with this one. Nyda, an adorable calico cat, charms the reader with tales that are humorous, enchanting, and fun. Readers follow her adventures from the time of her birth. She is the first to climb out of the box, daring her brothers to follow her. Told in the first person, the personification is spot on, allowing the reader to experience the world through the eyes of a cat.

She breaks things and trespasses on their territory. Soon she finds herself separated from her family.

Mrs. D gives us a really fun cat adventure and a loving tribute to the cat Nyda in the partially illustrated The Cat That Wanders By Itself! Living on a farm, Nyda finds all sorts of great ways to get herself (and her human companion) in trouble. This was a fun collection of misadventures that, for a cat lover like me, were equal parts hilarious and touching! It reminded me pleasantly of Charlotte’s Web in a way. Though a chapter book, I found it to be easy to read for all ages, and the illustrations sprinkled throughout the story were really well done and added another element of fun. If you are a cat lover or love children’s chapter books, definitely come cause some cat mayhem with The Cat That Wanders By Itself!

The story is told through the eyes of the kitten as she experiences new things and discovers that she needs a family and a home.
The author created an imaginative story with poetic passages of nature, seasons and of her cat, Nyda’s, adventures from the time she was a kitten until she is a full grown cat. The kitten is taken too soon from her mother’s care because of her mischievous nature, fearless personality and inquisitive spirit. She is quite a remarkable feline who gave much back to all who knew her.
If you are a lover of cats you will feel an affinity toward Nyda and understand her quirky nature.

Multiple award winning author Mrs. D shows her enjoyable skills with these heart-warming lovely stories of a cat. The two fascinating stories sprinkled with humor are told by the cat who enjoys each adventure. The book includes many drawings depicting what is occurring. Whether the reader likes cats or not, it is certain that the reader will love the cat in these tales. The stories are so good that it is even possible that while reading how much joy there is in having a cat, the reader will go out and acquire one. We had three at one time and it was fun to watch them.
