(PRWEB) January 07, 2015 -- A tropical garden gains a beautiful silver palm, who stretches to the sky and swirls her wide, green leaves, wistfully remembering the island home where she grew up. The Royal Palm shares her story in a new illustrated children’s book released by Dog Ear Publishing. On her home island, the young tree learns just how important friends and family can be to survival – a lesson she takes with her to her new home.

When she was young, the Royal Palm was frightened by hurricanes, which often swept over the island, but her cousins the plain palms protected the shore, standing up to wild storms and strong winds. As she grows tall, slim and beautiful, the self-absorbed tree changes from plain clothes to a shimmering silver dress, disdaining her plainer cousins in their dull dresses. She refuses to play with them, the wind, or any creature that messes up her hair. Even a warning from the sun can’t change her mind – or make her less lonely.

A vicious hurricane, complete with howling winds and crashing waves, threatens Royal Palm, but her cousins the plain palms help shelter her from the damage. In the end, Royal Palm realizes that despite her beauty, she is still a palm and should care for her friends. “The Royal Palm” adds a tropical twist to this fable about the importance of friends and family.

Chanoa, a freelance illustrator who works on children’s books and anime, once again pairs up with Mrs. D with colorful cartoon illustrations. Her computer-generated images burst with color and character, bringing the story to life in vivid detail.

Award-winning children’s author Mrs. D, also known as Olga D’Agostino, has written many children’s books and short stories. “The Trees Have Hearts,” “Good Morning, World!” and “The Little Girl Praying on the Hill” won Mom’s Choice Awards in 2013 and Readers’ Favorite International Awards in 2014. Mrs. D. grew up on a farm in western Ukraine and came to the United States in 1992 and ran her own business. The author, a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, lives in Smithville, N.J., with her husband Patrick.

When Nika wakes up one morning and opens her closet, all her clothes have disappeared, leaving behind only hangers. She can’t even change out of her pajamas because all her dresses, shirts, pants and even socks have disappeared. Even the hangers decide to leave.

In “Runaway Clothes,” Nika learns that she should take care of her clothes because they are tired of being flung in heaps in her closet. Soon she begins to fear that her toys will leave, too, so she takes steps to make them feel cherished. As the day wears on, the clothes realize that Nika has learned a lesson, and even the hangers realize home is where they need to be. Colorful cartoon images by Chanoa, a freelance illustrator who works on children’s books and anime, add a whimsical note to this story, which offers a gentle lesson about the importance of taking care of things.

Author Mrs. D., Olga D’Agostino, is an award-winning children’s author. Two of her children’s books, “The Trees Have Hearts” and “Good Morning, World,” won Mom’s Choice Awards in 2013. Mrs. D. was born and raised in western Ukraine and studied at the Lviv Business College, working in the food industry. She and her two daughters, Viktoriya and Veronika, came to the United States in 1992 and she ran her own business. I know there are thousands of wonderful writers waiting for their chance to be heard, who are a million times better than I am.  One part of me would not dare compete with their skills and talent, but the other part does not want this story to disappear. For years, it has flowed through my veins and tortured my mind. Therefore, here I am, an author who still struggles with English and sweats over every sentence. An author who feels helpless and frightened without her worn-out computer, missing most of the letters on its old keyboard. An author who made her editor rewire his brain to better understand her thinking.

A few years ago I left my comfort zone, and with two fingers on my daughter’s old computer I wrote my first story, “TheLittle Girl Praying on the Hill.” I may not know how to write perfectly in English, but my soul does. I believe stories like this could help growing generations better understand the purpose of life and the nature of the human spirit, and help them value what they have. It may change their views about the underprivileged and the forgotten.

“The Little Girl Praying on the Hill” is a bittersweet story based on the emotional childhood memories of a young girl trying to understand God’s will. The beauty of nature around her animates her and paints the perfect combination of colors, but life in her rundown village, sinking in mud after each rainfall, is a strong contrast. She exists between two worlds: her beautiful imagination and the harsh realities of life. The picture of majestic nature does not fit with the picture that God created for the people he loves.  Why did he not paint the village in the same vibrant colors as he did the nature around her and complete his art? Why did he place her on the wrong side of the world? Her emotions rise to unreachable heights and sink to devastating lows.

The heights are the happy moments of her life, filled with imaginary friends and sparkles of happiness, but the depths contain haunting memories, full of sadness and hate, crushed dreams and disappointments. Her daily existence forces the little girl to find escape in an imaginary world where she feels free and happy. Hiding in her imaginary kingdom, the girl clings to nature, which helps her to cope with the misery in which she was born. Growing up in a poor village of the post–World War II era in a country where half the men drink themselves to death by the age of forty, the confused child questions God. Why did he divide this world so unevenly?  Why did he drop her in the wrong place? The gripping beauty of his creation mesmerizes her young mind, but only for a moment before her memories of specific events make her doubt God’s intentions. Standing on top of the hill, surrounded by magnificent nature, the little girl tries to recognize his wisdom. She’s determined to understand the purpose for her existence.

"The Little Girl Praying on the Hill"  has many emotional ties to my early childhood. It is based on memories of my life in the Soviet Union in the early 1960’s. I write about what I know best—life.

About the Author 

Olga D’Agostino was born in West Ukraine, where she finished business college and worked in the food industry. She immigrated to the USA with her two small daughters and for years worked in her own business. A nature and animal lover, she loves discovering new things about the world. She speaks several languages fluently, but never attempted writing in English. With the help of her husband and daughters, she overcame her fears and started writing children’s stories in English. Carlo the Mouse on Vacation was her first published book. A full series of books on “Carlo The Mouse” will follow shortly. She has a wonderful bond with her unpredictable cat, Nyda, whose actions taught her many survival skills and inspired her to write more children’s books. All her stories are fun to read. They have valuable lessons about the importance of family, friendship, love, self-acceptance, and new discoveries. She plans to publish these stories in the near future.
