As bloggers, we spend a lot of time on the posts we publish. Naturally, we want to drive traffic to these posts, even after they are no longer at the top of the blog.
One way to drive traffic to older posts is to make sure they are search engine optimized so that when people search relevant terms they are brought to the appropriate post on our blog.
But there are other ways to also drive traffic to older posts.
When you write a new post, link back to older posts you have written that are relevant. This might not always be possible, but whenever you can link back within your current post – do it.
It allows people to go back and easily read more about a particular subject; which helps those older posts get traffic and improves SEO.
With WordPress.org, there are plugins you can install so that relevant posts will show up at the end of posts. The related posts are generally identified by tags, so be sure you are tagging your posts correctly to match what you have written in the past.
Some related post plugins I recommend for WordPress.org (you only need one):
Twitter is one of a blogger’s best friends when it comes to driving traffic to blog posts. By using an auto tweet old post plugin, you can have links automatically sent out at specified time intervals so that your followers can read old posts if they want.
Add a phrase such as “From the Archives” so that people know it’s a post from the past and make sure that the frequency of tweets isn’t too close together (maybe 12 to 24 hours per old post tweet).
A WordPress.org plugin I like for tweeting old posts is called Tweet Old Post.
Use one, two, or all of these suggestions above to help drive traffic to your old posts so that your words from the past don’t get lost in your archives.
